ABBOTSFORD — Abbotsford Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker has confirmed that a 69-year-old man who was struck after trying to cross moving traffic on George Ferguson Way in Abbotsford Tuesday night has died.

According to an emailed statement sent to Fraser Valley Today, Sgt. Walker says Tuesday night’s incident is now a confirmed fatality. The man died in hospital today.

The accident is Abbotsford’s 10th fatal accident in 2024, of which six have involved pedestrians.

Sgt. Paul Walker of the AbbyPD says police responded to the 32900 block of George Ferguson Way Tuesday night at about 6:45 p.m. for a reported collision involving a motor vehicle and a pedestrian. On arrival, first responders found a single vehicle that had struck a pedestrian on the road. The pedestrian sustained life-threatening injuries, Sgt. Walker said, and was transported to hospital via air ambulance.

Sgt. Walker said at the time of the collision, the pedestrian was crossing the roadway through moving traffic and not in a crosswalk. Alcohol is not being considered as a factor in the collision.

The driver of the vehicle was not injured, remained on scene and is cooperating with authorities. AbbyPD patrol officers, with the aid of the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service, remain on scene and are in the preliminary stages of the investigation.

Investigators are seeking witnesses and dashcam footage from individuals who may have been traveling along George Ferguson Way just before the collision. If you can assist, please call the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225 and reference AbbyPD file 2024-48522.
