CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack firefighters were paged Tuesday morning (Oct. 29) for a suspicious fire at the entrance to a business directly behind Best Buy on Luckakuck Way.

The call came in at around 10:18 a.m. Tuesday morning for the report of a sign on fire at 7846 Vedder Road, home of Fuel Motorsports. Responding firefighters located fire and smoke at the entrance of the business, located directly behind the Best Buy.

Firefighters gained access to the inside of the sign panel using a saw and other tools.

A City of Chilliwack employee who stopped by the scene of the incident, and who wished to remain anonymous, told Fraser Valley Today a female has been previously spotted living inside the sign. It’s not known if that same female caused today’s incident at the entrance to Fuel Motorsports.

A male employee of Fuel Motorsports said there’s no heat inside the sign panel, just electrical.

It’s not uncommon for unhoused people to loiter and congregate along the railroad tracks, or its adjacent corridor, not far from Fuel Motorsports. The Sardis Bottle Depot is just up the road for scavengers who bring cans and bottles to the depot for money.

One fire engine cleared the scene at 10:48 a.m., while the fire engine that assumed Vedder Road command told dispatch at 11:02 a.m. the fire had been extinguished, overhaul occurred, and they were clear from the scene.

Chilliwack firefighters returned to Fuel Motorsports at 12:16 p.m. for a post-fire check, according to scanner dispatch.

Just two nights ago, another similar suspicious fire occurred at Trixie’s Car Wash. According to Chilliwack resident Hailey VanBasten, a dumpster fire occurred early Monday morning sometime after midnight. She shared three images with Fraser Valley Today of first responders at or near the car wash.
