Chilliwack lawyer recipient of Forty Under 40 honour

CHILLIWACK — Jessie Ramsay, an integral member of an Indigenous Law group at Chilliwack law firm Baker Newby LLP, has been recognized by Business in Vancouver with the Forty Under 40 hononur for her leadership and dedication to the legal field and the community.

The Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce posted on Facebook Monday morning (Oct. 28) about Ramsay’s honour.

“Congratulations to Jessie Ramsay from Baker Newby LLP on being named one of BIV’s 2024 Forty Under 40 recipients! Jessie’s leadership and dedication to both the legal field and the community have earned her this well-deserved recognition,” Chilliwack Chamber wrote. “We’re excited to see the impact she continues to make!”

According to a biography of her on the firm’s website, Ramsay works in Baker Newby’s family and commercial litigation departments and is a key member of the firm’s Indigenous Law group. Within these portfolios, Ramsay has the opportunity to offer practical advice to individuals, businesses and communities.

Ramsay, who is Métis, grew up in Chilliwack. After graduating from secondary school, Ramsay obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree by majoring in Psychology and minoring in First Nations studies at the University of British Columbia. Upon completion of her Bachelor of Arts, Ramsay remained at UBC and began law school at Allard School of Law. Ramsay graduated with her Juris Doctorate degree in 2014 and shortly thereafter returned home to launch her career as a lawyer at Baker Newby LLP. Ramsay was called to the bar in 2015 and joined the Baker Newby LLP partnership in July 2019. Ramsay serves on the executive of the Canadian Bar Association Family Law (Fraser Valley) section and is an accredited family law mediator.

According to Baker Newby, Ramsay’s affinity for helping people has shaped not only her career but her life. Upon returning home to Chilliwack after law school, Ramsay immediately became involved in the broader Chilliwack community. In 2014 and 2015, Jessie joined the boards of directors for Stó:lō Community Futures and Chilliwack Community Services. In September, 2020, Jessie also joined the board of directors for Stó:lō Service Agency. As a current director for each of these organizations, Ramsay not only provides assistance at a governance level but is also involved with the programing and services provided.

“Jessie remains committed and excited to continue giving back to this wonderful community she calls home,” Baker Newby’s biography of Ramsay states. “For Jessie, family is extremely important and this influenced her decision to move back to Chilliwack after eight short years at UBC. Being close to her loved ones has always been an important value to her and one which she does not take for granted.”
