Fundraiser launched for former Chilliwack tow truck operator now facing lung cancer

CHILLIWACK — A GoFundMe has been launched for a Chilliwack resident who formerly operated Dave’s Towing in Chilliwack but has been too sick to work due to lung cancer.

According to the text of a GoFundMe appeal organized by Raina Lloyd, Dave Rowan of Chilliwack was diagnosed a few months back with lung cancer. The tumour is very large and occupies more than half of his lung, Lloyd wrote, saying it is inoperable and treatment will not help.

“He [Dave] is too sick for chemo and radiation,” Lloyd wrote in her GoFundMe, which has raised a little over $2,000 from 18 donations. “It has gone too far. We are extremely saddened to say that our amazing friend only has a few months with us. It’s heartbreaking for so many.”

Rowan is the same individual that ran for Chilliwack mayor back in 2018. He gained a reputation among friends and family for giving back to the Chilliwack community through a yearly Christmas fund for single parents, or by helping families and individuals who were in a tight spot financially. In May 2022, he dropped off 10 bikes and one scooter to fulfill the requests of children from Central Elementary School in Chilliwack.

“He is a man that gives to everyone,” Lloyd wrote in her fundraising appeal. “From his yearly Christmas fund for single moms. To making sure kids have lots at NWMRA races, and of course, his favourite time of the year, Halloween. He makes sure that everyone around him is taken care of. He’s at your door with cash in hand when things are rough. So I now ask you, family and friends, to support him.”

Lloyd says the lung cancer diagnosis has left Rowan unable to work or drive.

“He cannot work. He cannot drive. He still has bills to pay and no funding coming in,” Lloyd wrote in the GoFundMe appeal. “He’s in a tight spot. He’s always helped others and it’s his time now to be helped. He needs to rest and enjoy the time he has left and to not be stressed. So please donate and let’s give back to the man who is always the giver. Thank you.”
