RCMP unveil Cenotaph, Wall of Honour on anniversary of Const. Rick O’Brien’s death

MAPLE RIDGE – The Ridge Meadows’ RCMP detachment is now home to a pair of memorials paying tribute to one of their officers killed in the line of duty last year.

In a private ceremony late last week, the anniversary of Constable Frederick “Rick” O’Brien’s death was commemorated with the unveiling of a Cenotaph and Wall of Honour at the RCMP’s outlet at Haney Place.

The accolades follow a similar tribute in Regina earlier this month when O’Brien was added to a memorial wall during a national service at the RCMP Academy.

“Let’s treasure the moments we shared with Rick and continue to be inspired by the light he brought into our lives,” Ridge Meadows Supt. Wendy Mehat said in a statement.

O’Brien was killed September 22, 2023 while executing a search warrant in Coquitlam.

A father of six, O’Brien spent his whole policing career at Ridge Meadows and celebrated seven years of service before being shot early morning at a residence.

Last October, about 5,000 people participated in a Langley service for O’Brien that included a procession of first responders from RCMP detachments and other law enforcement agencies.

Since then, O’Brien has been honoured in the community at several events including the Joint Forces Jamboree and unveiling of the Const. Rick O’Brien Youth Lounge in Pitt Meadows.

His name will also be added to the BC Law Enforcement Memorial in Victoria and to the Canadian Police and Peace Officers’ Memorial in Ottawa later this month.
