Low-cost carrier opens retail store in Chilliwack after expanding its Fraser Valley service area

CHILLIWACK — Less than a month after the company announced it would expand its service area to include Chilliwack and Hope, Freedom Mobile has now opened a retail store in the Cottonwood Centre mall.

Mark Davis, general manager for Warrington PCI, told Fraser Valley Today that Freedom Mobile opened earlier this month in August.

Low-cost telecommunications provider Freedom Mobile announced on July 23 that it had expanded its service area to include Chilliwack, Hope and other cities in British Columbia and Alberta.

In a statement sent to Fraser Valley Today, the company says over 250,000 more Canadians can subscribe to Freedom Mobile’s affordable slate of wireless services as the telecom expands to Chilliwack, Hope, Salmon Arm and Revelstoke, and Camrose, Wetaskiwin and Edson in Alberta.

The company says the this latest market expansion is made possible by partner agreements enabled by the CRTC’s MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) framework which also recently enabled Freedom to launch its services in Manitoba.

“Consumers from across Canada have been demanding more competition in wireless for a very long time,” says Pierre Karl Péladeau, President and CEO of Quebecor, the parent company of Freedom Mobile. “We’re happy to continue to bring Canadians the many benefits of having a strong fourth player in the market.”

Freedom says its technical teams have been making numerous improvements to the wireless network, from expanding 5G areas to activating dozens of new cell sites across Canada, and deploying 3500 MHz spectrum on several existing cell sites for additional speed and lower latency.

The company claims it has recently fulfilled all the commitments it had made to Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) at the time of the Freedom Mobile acquisition. Quebecor says it is fully committed to making sure all Freedom wireless customers enjoy the best possible experience wherever they are.

In late July, Freedom had been promoting a $34 monthly plan in which customers get 50 GB of data in Canada and the United States on a two-year basis, with the caveat they bring their own phone.

Besides Chilliwack, the closest Freedom Mobile store to Chilliwack is in Abbotsford at the Sevenoaks Shopping Centre. Customers can visit freedommobile.ca.
