CHILLIWACK — The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) is putting resources into fighting a wildfire east of Chilliwack Lake that Mother Nature had a hand in starting Friday (Aug 9). The BCWS reports the Mount Edgar wildfire is the result of a single tree lightning strike. It was spotted at approximately 9:30 p.m. Friday.

In an update Sunday morning, the BCWS said an Initial Attack crew was assigned to the fire Saturday. The crew remained on the fire overnight and is continuing to attack it Sunday. The firefighters on the ground are being assisted by one helicopter and two tree fallers.

Meantime the BCWS says it is continuing to attack the Harrison Hill wildfire north of Chilliwack. The fire, which was started by lightning Friday, is located in steep terrain.

The BCWS says the fire is actively being monitored by officials. One helicopter is being used to contain the wildfire.

Officials say the fire will continue to be suppressed with aviation equipment until ground crews become available to extinguish it with a ground attack.

One other wildfire in the Chilliwack area is now categorized as being held. The fire is located near Church Mountain, south of Chilliwack near the United States border.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

All three wildfires are measured at less than one hectare in size. No structures or infrastructure is threatened by the fires.
