CHILLIWACK — Whether it’s stolen shipping containers from rural Abbotsford or tractors from rural Chilliwack, brazen thieves will go to any lengths necessary to commit crimes.

Mounties in Chilliwack say a local farmer called the Chilliwack RCMP on Sunday, May 5 after observing his own tractor being driven by unknown people in the Greendale area.

According to a news brief from Corporal Carmen Kiener of the Chilliwack RCMP, the farmer approached the occupants of the tractor who then fled the scene in a separate vehicle. After returning to his property with the tractor, the farmer noticed his barn had been broken into and other items had been swiped by the crooks.

The Chilliwack RCMP says it is working with the RCMP Integrated Forensic Identification Section to identify the thieves.

The RCMP file number is 2024-17794.

The theft was one of 320 calls for service that the Chilliwack RCMP Detachment responded to between 6 a.m. on Friday, May 3 and 4 a.m. on Monday May 6.

Speaking of rural crimes, the Crime Reduction Unit of the Abbotsford Police Department is investigating the theft of a 40-foot shipping container from a rural property in Abbotsford in mid-April. AbbyPD spokesperson Constable Art Stele said investigators suspect the container may have been stolen during daytime hours on Monday, April 15 by unknown suspects.

Police say a pair of flat deck trucks with folding knuckle-boom cranes are suspected of being used to remove the shipping container from the property in the 6000 block of Lefeuvre Road in Abbotsford. One truck was described as having a black cab with chrome accents, and the second truck was described as having a red cab and towing a flat-deck trailer. The container owners were not present when the container was removed and had not given permission for it to be removed from the property.

AbbyPD CRU personnel have reason to believe that the company or companies whose heavy equipment was utilized in moving and transporting the shipping container may have been unaware that the container owners had not consented to their container being moved. Investigators are appealing to the public for any information or dashcam footage that may assist in identifying the company/companies utilized in transporting the container in hopes it will give investigators evidence toward the eventual recovery of the container and its contents to the lawful owners.
