CHILLIWACK — In a heart-warming display of community spirit, the G.W. Graham football program hosted and organized a free football camp for over 50 enthusiastic kids over the weekend.

Despite consistent downpours as rain fell throughout the day, G.W. Graham varsity head coach Ryk Piché said the camp instilled not only practical skills for youth but reinforced the commitment of the G.W. football program in nurturing young talent and promoting a love for the game.

Led by dedicated varsity and junior varsity players alongside seasoned coaches from G.W. Graham, the camp offered a dynamic and engaging experience for the young participants. Under the guidance of the varsity and junior varsity players, the kids were able to hone their football skills through a series of drills and exercises designed to enhance their agility, coordination, and teamwork.

“From perfecting the art of passing to mastering defensive techniques, every aspect of the game was covered with enthusiasm and encouragement,” Coach Piché said. “Moreover, the presence of the G.W. Graham coaches added invaluable expertise to the camp, providing personalized instruction and mentorship to the budding athletes. Their guidance not only improved the kids’ football abilities but also instilled important values such as discipline, resilience, and sportsmanship.”

Despite the adverse weather conditions, the atmosphere at the camp remained vibrant and energetic during the camp, propelled by the passion and dedication of everyone involved.

“The unwavering commitment of the G.W. Graham football program to foster a culture of inclusivity and empowerment was palpable, as kids of all skill levels came together to learn and grow in a supportive environment,” Coach Piché said. “As the camp concluded, it was evident that the impact extended far beyond the football field. The success of the G.W. Graham football program’s free kids football camp serves as a shining example of the transformative power of sports in bringing communities together and inspiring the next generation of athletes. By providing opportunities for young individuals to discover and nurture their potential, initiatives like these lay the foundation for a brighter and more inclusive future, both on and off the field.”

Coach Piché said camps like these help grow the sport thanks to the unparalleled support of his coaching staff and the broader Chilliwack community.

“It was an amazing event to be a part of; I can’t say enough about what an amazing staff we have here at G.W. Graham, and the community support is second to none,” Coach Piché remarked. “I love having the opportunity to be a part of this and see the young kids in our community playing a sport we all love. We just want to see this sport continue to grow at all levels. I’m truly blessed to be involved in this.”

Amanda Johnson, a dedicated parent of a G.W. Graham student athlete, extended a special thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the yearly G.W. Graham football kids camp, including Save-On-Foods Garrison for providing food, the Valley Huskers for their invaluable assistance, and the Chilliwack Giants for their ongoing dedication to fostering football in Chilliwack. Johnson also thanked photographer Joanne Hewitt for her exemplary pictures, and the football players themselves who gave back to the sport they love.

“Lastly, thank you to the families who came out and braved the crazy rain,” Johnson said. “We had such a great time, even soaking wet. Your contributions have made a lasting impact, and we are incredibly grateful for all of your support. Bring on the 2024 season!”
