Grouse Grind opens for the season this weekend

VANCOUVER — The iconic Grouse Grind Trail is set to reopen to eager hikers Saturday (Apr. 27) following the completion of annual maintenance, trail enhancements, and a trailhead upgrade project.

Enhancements this year include a redeveloped trailhead entrance, new seating, a water fountain, stretching bars, and enhanced accessibility for first responders. Officials have also replaced a bridge near the one-quarter mark. Environmental restoration efforts have also been completed along the trail.

“The changes to the Grouse Mountain Regional Park trailhead are transformative — not only is the area more welcoming and attractive, but it responds to the needs of hikers by providing space to warm up, fill water bottles, and navigate park maps,” remarked John McEwen, Vice Chair of Metro Vancouver’s Board of Directors and Chair of the Regional Parks Committee.

Funded by the Government of Canada and Province of BC, in collaboration with Metro Vancouver, the $3.5-million trail and site improvements project has been ongoing since 2021. The initiative aims to preserve forest ecosystems while enriching the visitor experience.

“We’re excited to welcome everyone back for the season to a Grouse Grind Trail that is safer and has more amenities, but still offers the challenge people crave,” expressed George V. Harvie, Chair of Metro Vancouver’s Board of Directors.

Located within Grouse Mountain Regional Park, the Grouse Grind Trail is internationally recognized for its demanding terrain, drawing approximately 250,000 visitors annually. Spanning 2.5 kilometers, the trail begins at an elevation of 300 meters and ascends to 1,100 meters.

Officials say unseasonably dry and warm weather has allowed the opening of the trail a month earlier than in 2023. However, hikers are reminded to remain vigilant, especially concerning behavior that could incite wildfires.

Hikers should note that the Grouse Grind Trail will be closed all day on Monday, April 29, due to construction work related to the installation of a new gondola at Grouse Mountain Resort.
