Fraser Valley Regional District seeks members for Board of Variance

CHILLIWACK — The Fraser Valley Regional District is currently looking for three members of the public to serve as volunteers on the Board of Variance for a three-year term.

According to a news release from the regional district, the Board of Variance functions as an independent body that evaluates requests from property owners for minor variances to the FVRD’s zoning bylaw. These variances typically relate to the siting, size and dimensions of buildings that would cause a person undue hardship.

The British Columbia Local Government Act requires local governments that have adopted a zoning bylaw to establish a board of variance. The board deals with requests for minor relaxations to the zoning bylaw, where it is evident that the present zoning creates an undue hardship unique to the property in question.

According to the FVRD website, members of the BOV serve in a volunteer capacity and are not compensated for their attendance at meetings. However, members are entitled to receive payment for expenses incurred in the conduct of their official duties including: transportation to and from their home or office to meetings of the board and inspection trips to view sites involved in appeals.
