Chilliwack-Hope MP Mark Strahl slams federal budget, saying it will only increase inflation and not stop rising costs

CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack-Hope MP Mark Strahl came out swinging against the 2024 budget tabled Tuesday (Apr. 16) by the federal Liberals, saying the budget still hasn’t balanced itself as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau once said.

“After eight years of Justin Trudeau, the budget is still not balancing itself,” Strahl said in a news release Tuesday (Apr. 16). “Everything Justin Trudeau spends money on gets worse and more costly. Trudeau has spent, Canadians are broke, and the country is broken.”

Strahl says food prices keep rising at a time when the carbon tax also increased April 1.

“Food prices have gone up faster than at any time in a generation because of the carbon tax Trudeau is imposing on our food,” Strahl said. “A carbon tax that, with the help of the NDP, he plans to quadruple to 61 cents a litre. Liberal Budget 2024 failed to stop inflationary deficits with nearly $40 billion in new spending. Trudeau’s government has doubled rent, mortgage payments, and down payments.”

Strahl asserts Canadian families are not getting ahead due to exorbitant spending by the federal Liberals.

“Struggling families can’t afford higher taxes and more inflationary spending that drives up the cost of everything and keeps interest rates high,” Strahl said in a prepared statement.

Strahl said the Conservatives wanted the carbon tax scrapped on farmers and food production by passing Bill C-234 in its entirety; ensuring more homes, not bureaucracy, by requiring cities to permit 15 per cent more home-building each year as a condition of receiving federal infrastructure money; and capping spending with a dollar-for-dollar rule to bring down rates and inflation.

“The government must find a dollar in savings for every new dollar of spending,” Strahl said. “Justin Trudeau refused to listen. Common Sense Conservatives will not support the budget.”
