CHILLIWACK — Fraser Valley Today has learned that Dr. David Moniz, a Chilliwack emergency physician and anesthetist who works at Chilliwack General Hospital, will run as a BC United MLA candidate in this year’s provincial election.

Fraser Valley Today confirmed with Dr. Moniz this past week and Monday morning (Apr. 15) that he is set to run in the Chilliwack North riding where he’ll compete against BC NDP MLA Dan Coulter and B.C. Conservative candidate Heather Maahs.

His X/Twitter profile states that he is an anesthetist/emergency physician/family physician, in addition to being a father, husband, brother, and uncle. He says he is an advocate for health system reform and healthcare modernization.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Dr. Moniz describes himself as a dedicated and versatile medical practitioner and fellow in rural and remote medicine. He currently serves as an emergency physician at CGH, including his previous role as acting director of medical services at CGH.

“I’ve successfully led staff in process improvement initiatives, enhancing patient flow, and elevating satisfaction levels,” Dr. Moniz wrote in his LinkedIn profile. “Passionate about making a difference in patients’ lives, I’ve honed my skills in operations management, staff scheduling, and continuous improvement. My commitment to excellence extends to medical education, where I serve as a clinical instructor at the University of British Columbia, contributing to both undergraduate and postgraduate programs in the Department of Family Practice.”

His medical journey has allowed him to hold diverse roles such as rural general anesthetist, board chair of the Remote Vocational Training Scheme, and medical educator at the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM).

“As a healthcare professional, I take pride in comprehensive assessments, care plan development, and fostering patient and family education,” said Dr. Moniz, who recently completed a Master of Public Health and a Master of Health Leadership and Management at UNSW (University of New South Wales).
