Chilliwack RCMP honours off-duty Abbotsford police officers, paramedic for water rescue at Cultus Lake

CHILLIWACK — Two off-duty Abbotsford Police Department officers and a Lower Mainland paramedic were among those honoured at the Officer in Charge award ceremony last week at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre.

The trio received the Excellence in Valor award for their courageous 2023 rescue of a drowning victim at Cultus Lake. The award recipients include AbbyPD Constable Janelle Smith, B.C. EHS paramedic Ariana Dudley and AbbyPD Constable Jacqueline Cardinal.

Abbotsford PD Deputy Chief Constable Dan Culbertson recognized the trio on X/Twitter Friday, March 15.

Culbertson wrote: “Yesterday, the Chilliwack RCMP awarded 2 AbbyPD members and a Paramedic ‘Excellence in Valour’ for their courageous 2023 off-duty rescue of a drowning victim in Cultus Lake. These individuals went above & beyond to help others in distress-Thank you! Your Community. Your AbbyPD.”

The RCMP’s annual Officer in Charge Awards Ceremony recognized deserving individuals for acts of bravery, exceptional performance, innovative contributions, leadership, and community service. The event acknowledged the remarkable achievements and contributions of 46 individuals within the Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment.

Superintendent Davy Lee, Officer in Charge of the detachment, presided over the event. Among the distinguished guests was Chief Superintendent Duncan Pound, Assistant District Commander and Operations Officer of E Division Lower Mainland Superintendent, alongside local dignitaries and friends and family of the recipients.
