Chilliwack council to consider drone light show on Canada Day instead of traditional fireworks show
CHILLIWACK — Given the uncertainty of provincial fire bans over the summer and its corresponding impact on traditional fireworks shows, Chilliwack council is set to consider a proposal at its meeting this Tuesday (Mar. 19) that would see a drone light show performance on Canada Day this year.
According to a report prepared by Carol Marleau, manager of recreation services for the City of Chilliwack, city staff have been exploring alternatives that will deliver the same kind of experience as fireworks but without the hazards associated with pyrotechnics. Marleau wrote in her report that drone light shows have emerged as a growing trend in entertainment. They’re thought to be more environmentally friendly with less noise, minimal light and air pollution, and more suitable for individuals who are neurodivergent.
Marleau states drone light shows are performed by illuminated, synchronized and choreographed clusters of drones that are configured into assorted aerial formations. They’re typically designed and powered through advanced software and GPS coordinate positioning.
