YOUR PERSPECTIVE: A plan for prosperity over the NDP’s legacy of debt

Mar 13, 2024 | 8:00 AM

Unprecedented deficits, soaring debt, and nothing to show for it — this is the alarming reality of life in B.C. under the NDP.

The 2024 budget unveiled by British Columbia’s NDP government is a clear illustration of their misguided priorities and fiscal mismanagement. Under the guise of addressing the cost of living, the NDP is driving the province into record-breaking debt, burdening future generations and failing to deliver real economic growth. Affordability is at top of mind for all British Columbians, and yet this budget will spend more to achieve less.

One of the most alarming aspects of this budget is the staggering $8 billion deficit it leaves behind. This reckless overspending is not only unsustainable but also indicative of a government that is out of touch with the financial realities facing its citizens.

In just seven years, the NDP has more than doubled the province’s debt, from approximately $8,500 for every British Columbian in 2017 to a staggering $22,000. This represents a more than 150 percent increase, highlighting the NDP’s inability to manage the province’s finances responsibly.

Furthermore, the NDP’s out-of-control spending is contributing to inflation, driving up the cost of living for ordinary British Columbians. This budget will only make it harder for people who are already struggling to make ends meet, increasing the price of necessities like gas, groceries and housing. Once again, NDP policies are pushing the dream of homeownership even further out of reach for everyday people.

The NDP’s failures extend beyond the realm of fiscal responsibility. Despite promises to improve healthcare, the reality is starkly different. British Columbians are facing some of the worst healthcare outcomes in the country under a collapsing healthcare system. While the NDP may believe in haphazardly throwing money at the issues, they continuously fail to produce the results we need.

Moreover, the NDP’s neglect of the mental health and addiction crisis is nothing short of shameful. 2023 saw the highest number of overdose deaths on record, yet there is no funding in this budget for new measures to address this pressing issue. The NDP’s reckless decriminalization experiment has only exacerbated the crisis, leaving thousands of families devastated by preventable tragedies.

In Budget 2024, the NDP offers more of the same empty, tired rhetoric and out-of-control spending with no results to show for it. Things are getting worse, not better under their leadership. British Columbians are tired of the NDP’s broken promises. The residents of our province deserve better.

As British Columbians face the highest housing and gas prices in the country, a healthcare system in crisis, and a mounting overdose epidemic, it is clear this NDP government has failed them. The time for change is now.

BC United, under the leadership of Kevin Falcon, offers a clear and sensible alternative. We believe that government should take less from people during a cost-of-living crisis, not more. With a focus on fiscal responsibility and delivering real results, BC United has proposed common-sense solutions to make life more affordable for all British Columbians, such as cutting the provincial fuel tax, getting rid of the carbon tax on home heating, and providing greater relief to first-time home buyers.

It’s time to reject the NDP’s empty rhetoric and reckless spending and embrace a new vision for British Columbia. United, we will fix it.
