CHILLIWACK — Environment Canada has issued a pair of highway alerts for high-altitude highways leading from the Fraser Valley to the B.C. Interior.

The alerts were issued for the Coquihalla Highway and Highway 3 through the Allison Pass and warn of significant snowfall Sunday and Monday.

According to forecasters. a large low-pressure system will move into the region Saturday, bringing with it cooler temperatures and the threat of snow. The national weather agency says snow levels will dip down to valley bottoms because of the cold air associated with the low.

The alert warns that snow is expected to begin falling Saturday and then intensify Sunday before tapering off Monday. It says drivers can expect to encounter reduced visibility in heavy snow along with blowing snow.
