Suspect sought after officer injured in hit and run in Delta

BURNABY — A routine traffic stop took a dangerous turn on Saturday (Feb. 17) when an officer with BC Highway Patrol – Burnaby was struck by a fleeing suspect on Highway 91 southbound at 72nd Ave in Delta.

A BC Highway Patrol news release states that at around 10:30 a.m., the officer had pulled over a vehicle linked to a man with an outstanding B.C. wide warrant for his arrest. The encounter took a turn as the driver, identified as 57-year-old Tobin Peter Haas of Vancouver, abruptly fled the scene, allegedly striking the officer in the process.

Emergency services, including the Delta Fire Department, BC Ambulance Service, officers from the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service, and Delta Police, quickly responded to the incident. The injured officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital. The officer has since been released from hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

While the vehicle driven by Haas has been recovered, the suspect remains at large. Haas is wanted for an outstanding warrant related to break and enter, as well as for questioning regarding the hit-and-run incident. Authorities caution the public against approaching Haas and encourage them to contact their local police if he is spotted.
