CHILLIWACK — Following the purchase of three parcels of land and the demolition of structures on those specific properties, coupled with months of construction activity, the City of Chilliwack says a new parking lot on Victoria Avenue in downtown Chilliwack is ready for daytime usage.

The city wrote on its website that the Victoria Avenue parking lot just east of Young Road is now open during daylight hours, with additional electrical work to be completed.

The City of Chilliwack confirmed on its website that it purchased three lots along the north side of Victoria Avenue, east of Young Road, in the downtown core near District 1881. The previous structures were demolished to prepare to build additional parking spaces.

Phase 1 of the project had an estimated completion date of fall 2023, while phase 2 of the project is scheduled to be completed by the end of summer 2024.

Downtown Chilliwack parking inventory has been in short order near the intersection of Young Road and Yale Road due to the popularity of District 1881.

The Victoria Avenue parking lot will feature 58 parking stalls once it is fully built, including four stalls that will have level 2 electric vehicle chargers.

The specific lots that were purchased by the city consist of 9384 Young Road, 46017 Victoria Avenue and 46029 Victoria Avenue.

Victoria Avenue is now a one-way roadway from Young Road to Nowell Street. This allows for additional parking spaces to be built within this section of roadway.

The parking lot construction contract was awarded to Strohmaier Excavating Ltd. in the amount of $977,797.40 during a July 2023 meeting of Chilliwack council.

The process of building the Victoria Avenue parking lot consisted of property purchases, demolition of existing structures, property rezoning, finalization of design drawings, and contractor selection.
