City of Chilliwack sends out flood safety message

CHILLIWACK — The City of Chilliwack has released a series of tips for residents who are dealing with rising waters caused by the latest atmospheric river systems to hit the Fraser Valley.

Safety is the number one concern. It says residents should respect the power of fast-moving water and avoid activities that would place them at the top of protective dykes that double as recreational trails.

It also warns against driving through floodwaters. If a car stalls in water that is deeper than initially thought, it suggests you get out of the vehicle as quickly and as safely as possible and move to higher ground.

It’s also asking residents to prepare their properties if they are under threat. All chemicals including pesticides and herbicides should be placed in waterproof containers and stored high above the water.
