LNG dispute brewing between First Nations and Province

VANCOUVER — A group of B.C. First Nations and environmental organizations is calling for the province to follow the American decision to pause new LNG projects.

In a joint statement, the coalition, which includes the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs and Dogwood, says Phase 1 of LNG Canada in Kitimat could become the province’s largest source of emissions.

The call comes after the Biden administration announced it is delaying consideration of new natural gas export terminals in the United States.

Industry groups have condemned the pause as a “win for Russia,” while environmentalists in the U.S. say an increase in LNG exports would have locked in potentially catastrophic emissions.
