CHILLIWACK — A cornerstone of the downtown Chilliwack landscape for decades will hold its final church service next month before moving to another location.

Secretary Lynn Catto confirmed in an email to Fraser Valley Today Tuesday (Jan. 23) that Cheam View United Church will conduct its final Sunday service at its downtown location, 45835 Spadina Avenue, before relocating to its new location at Quarry and Yale Roads in Little Mountain.

“We have renovated our location at the corner of Quarry and Yale Roads in East Chilliwack,” Catto said via email. “The congregation is moving there as it will be ready for occupancy. Our first service at the new location will be February 18.”

In 2019, Chilliwack United Church, Mt. Shannon United Church and Rosedale United Church made the decision to amalgamate as one and become known as Cheam View United Church.

The downtown church will be redeveloped at some point for the purpose of constructing a new 6-storey mixed-use building. The building will feature a first storey split into an indoor common amenity area with an outdoor patio and space for club or lodge uses. The upper storeys will contain 64 residential units including 20 affordable market rental units, 33 rent geared to income units and 11 deep subsidy units, and an outdoor amenity area. The main entrance to the club or lodge will be accessible from Spadina Avenue, while the main residential entry will be on Main Street. The L-shaped building design for the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth storeys will front both Spadina and Main.

When Chilliwack council first considered a rezoning application for the church property in November 2023, the municipality received 13 emails of suppport from Chilliwack residents because of the project’s stated goal of building affordable housing for seniors, low-income families, and individuals with mobility challenges. This project, a partnership between Cheam View United Church and Mamele’awt Qweesome Housing Society, one of the supporters said, will bring much needed affordable housing options for community members who are struggling to meet their housing needs.

According to city planning documents, a housing agreement must be registered with the certificate of title to the land so that the development is preserved as below market rental housing.
