CHILLIWACK — A Chilliwack resident says a residential break and enter has resulted in the theft of a family bike, leaving her teenaged son who has muscular dystrophy without a source of transportation and independence.

Colleen Roy posted on Facebook over the weekend that someone broke into her garage in Fairfield Island and stole her son’s bike. Her son has muscular dystrophy, which the Mayo Clinic defines as a group of diseases that institute progressive weakness and a loss of muscle mass.

“He has Muscular Dystrophy and this bike was his only source of independence,” Roy wrote on Facebook. “If anyone sees anything like it when they’re out and about, we would really appreciate a message. Thank you so much!”

Roy shared an image of the bike painted red, though the fenders have since been painted grey. The bike featured an electric motor, and the key had a Thor hammer. There were baskets on the front and back, along with a back support on the seat.

Roy acknowledges that modifications could have occurred once the bike was stolen.

“There were baskets on front and back, and a back support on the seat. These could have been changed, of course,” Roy wrote.

Roy estimates the theft occurred during the night, or early morning, of Tuesday, January 2 or Wednesday, January 3. She said she’s been contacted by a number of people saying there have been possible sightings of the bike.

“It hasn’t been located, though a lot of people are sending me messages of possible sightings,” Roy said Monday morning (Jan. 22). We posted about it then, and started the file, but essentially felt it was a done deal. A few days ago someone on our Fairfield Island group page messaged me thinking they’d seen it, so I reposted and now everyone is trying to help out, which is so uplifting.”

The Chilliwack RCMP file number is 24-374.

Fraser Valley Today spoke Monday morning with a former Fraser Valley firefighter who was involved in the initial effort to fundraise for this bike, which cost an estimated $5,000 in approximately 2016. The former firefighter didn’t want to be named but is working behind the scenes to contact charitable associations who might be able to pitch in and get the 17-year-old boy’s bike replaced. More details will be shared if the boy’s bike can be replaced.
