ABBOTSFORD — A woman who was convicted of smothering her young daughter has died in custody at a prison in Abbotsford.

Correctional Service Canada announced Wednesday (Jan. 3) that Lisa Batstone, an inmate at Fraser Valley Institution in Abbotsford, died while in custody on Monday, January 1.

At the time of death, Batstone had been serving an indeterminate sentence that began on September 3, 2019, for second-degree murder.

The inmate’s next of kin have been notified.

As with all incidents involving the death of an inmate, Correctional Service Canada (CSC) will review the circumstances. CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be contacted when an inmate dies in custody.

Batstone lost an appeal against her conviction for the second-degree murder of her daughter Teagan Batstone in 2022.

The Appeals Court ruling stated Batstone never came to terms with her marital breakdown from Teagan’s father, and intended to commit suicide and did not want to leave her daughter with him.

She was sentenced to life in prison with a non-parole period of at least 15 years, a sentence upheld on appeal, according to the Canadian Press.
