ABBOTSFORD — Looking to improve upon their 6-5-3 record this past fall, the UFV Cascades women’s soccer team announced four recruits from the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland have committed to play for them this upcoming year, including Chilliwack standout Sarah Powley.

Powley, a 5’7″ defender from Surrey United SC, joins fellow defender Kenzie Fitzgerald (5’8″, Surrey United SC) and attacking players Keanna Bentley (5’9″ striker, Coastal FC) and Zoë Black (5’6″ striker/winger, Coquitlam Metro Ford SC) as the newest round of additions to the program. Powley’s presence will help bolster a defence that only surrendered one goal or less in 10 games last season.

“Sarah brings consistency and composure to the centre back position,” said UFV Cascades women’s soccer coach Ari Adams. “She is able to lead and instruct from the back line, and doesn’t back down from a tackle. Her composure and passing ability will bring more depth to our lineup.”

Powley said she chose UFV in part because of her desire to stay local, pursue nursing and join a talented soccer program.

“I chose UFV because I felt it was the right university for myself,” said Powley, a student at G.W. Graham. “Going into it I knew I wanted my post secondary institution to be local, have a nursing program, and also have a talented soccer team. Since Ari has taken on the head coach role this past season I have seen the UFV women’s soccer team take huge steps in the right direction and this is something I could see myself being a part of. I look forward to becoming a cascade and hope I can continue to bring success to the UFV women’s soccer team.”

Adams added that each recruit enters the program with the same mindset and work rate that UFV’s current players built and established during the 2023 season. The Cascades ended their 2023 season with a 6-5-3 record in the regular season, before falling in penalty kicks to the Victoria Vikes in the playoffs. The team will look to improve on that finish when their 2024 season gets underway in the fall. All regular season and playoff games are available to watch live and on demand at canadawest.tv.
