ABBOTSFORD — Traffic is moving along the Marshall Road Connector once again following the completion of repairs that led to a temporary closure shortly after it had opened in the fall of 2022.

The roadway is seen as an important link connecting King Road and Mt. Lehman Road through the 16th Avenue corridor. When it opened last year, the City of Abbotsford said the extension of Marshall Road through western Abbotsford and to the 16th Avenue corridor would support economic vitality in the city, by providing a direct link to three U.S. Border crossings, Vancouver and Abbotsford airports.

However within weeks of its opening, soil settlement issues in the roadbed emerged, leading to dangerous dips in the road and forcing its closure for repairs. 13 months later, following extensive repairs, the road has reopened.

The City of Abbotsford led the Marshall Road Connector project from its inception in the summer of 2018. The road is expected to enhance transportation corridors between Abbotsford and Langley/Surrey while alleviating traffic congestion on the Fraser Highway. The project includes a new road alignment connecting King Road at Bradner Road with Mt. Lehman Road at Marshall Road, along with a realignment of Ross Road.

The City did not respond to a request for information on the cost of the repairs but in an email to Fraser Valley Today stated the costs are being borne by Fraser Valley Aggregates, the supplier of the material used in the development of the roadbed.
