CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack Fire Chief Ian Josephson says Chilliwack firefighters were dispatched Thursday night (Dec. 14) for a kitchen fire in one of the apartment units at the 80-unit complex behind Canton Garden known as The Waterstone, 45603 Yale Road.

According to an email from Chief Josephson Friday morning, the building’s fire sprinkler system activated and extinguished the fire, subsequently triggering the fire alarm and allowing the residents to safely evacuate.

The building is operated by the Mamale’awt Qweesome Housing Society, offering 80 affordable apartments for singles, families and seniors with low to moderate incomes spanning one-bedroom units up to four bedrooms.

There were no injuries to residents or firefighters, Josephson said, and the fire is considered accidental.

According to a social media post from a resident of the Waterstone building, the entire building was evacuated as a result of the fire. Several areas of the building have sustained water damage including units where elders resided. A video shared by this resident on the Chilliwack Beware! Facebook group shows water dripping heavily onto the ground in front of a ground-level entrance.

The resident who posted on social media stated that fire alarm activations had become such a regular occurrence that residents did not always pay attention to them.
