IHIT investigators release image of suspect in father and son killings in Richmond

RICHMOND — Investigators have identified a suspect in the double homicide of a father and his son last month in Richmond. A blurry image of the suspect was released to the media Friday afternoon (Dec. 8).

Richmond RCMP responded to a distress call regarding a suspicious circumstance in the 6200 block of Goldsmith Drive in Richmond around 10:30 p.m. onNovember 30. Upon arrival, officers discovered the bodies of 46-year-old Derrek Chen and his 13-year-old son inside the residence.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) assumed control of the case and has collaborated closely with the Richmond RCMP, RCMP Forensic Identification Service, and the BC Coroners Service throughout the investigation.

Mr. Chen and his son are confirmed as victims. IHIT has decided to disclose Mr. Chen’s identity to aid in the ongoing investigation. IHIT investigators, relying on extensive evidence, believe a suspect fled the scene on foot around 8:40 p.m. into London Sports Fields.

“We are asking to speak with everyone who was at the London Fields on November 30, 2023 between 8:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.,” says Sgt. Timothy Pierotti of IHIT. “Anyone who knew Derrek Chen or his 13-year-old son, who can provide insight as to who would want to hurt these people, please contact IHIT immediately.”
