IIO of BC to probe officer-involved fatal shooting in Abbotsford; man allegedly threatened ARH staff

ABBOTSFORD — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating a police-involved shooting incident in Abbotsford where one man has died.

Information provided by the Abbotsford Police Department states that at about 3:45 p.m. today (November 30, 2023), police responded to a report of a man with a weapon at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital.

When police arrived, there was an interaction between the man and police, and an officer discharged their firearm.

The man sustained a gunshot-related injury and, despite receiving immediate treatment, was subsequently pronounced deceased.

The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred, and initial investigative steps will seek to confirm the details of the incident and whether any force used was necessary, proportionate, and justified under the circumstances.

According to a news release from police, AbbyPD officers responded to Abbotsford Regional Hospital (ARH) following a 9-1-1 call reporting a male in possession of a weapon threatening harm to medical staff.

Attending officers arriving to the area located the man and had an interaction with the suspect that resulted in an officer discharging their firearm.

The man received immediate medical attention but later succumbed to his injury. No police officers, medical staff or patients were injured.

The Independent Investigations Office is now the lead agency investigating the incident.

AbbyPD says there is no further information at this time to release.
