CHILLIWACK — The Chilliwack Fire Department says quick thinking by a resident of a Promontory home was instrumental in minimizing a house fire that happened Monday evening (Nov. 27).

According to a news release from assistant fire chief Andy Brown, 20 firefighters were dispatched to the report of something on fire near the 46000 block of Promontory Road. Crews from Halls 1 (Cheam Avenue) and 4 (South Sumas Road) responded and discovered visible smoke emanating from the rear of a single-family home in the 46000 block of Bedford Parkway, not to be confused with Bedford Place just south of Watson Road.

Upon further investigation, Brown reported, crews reported the fire had been knocked down by the resident of the home using a garden hose. Initial arriving crews established a water supply and began overhauling the fire to ensure it was extinguished. Residents were at home at the time of the fire, and their efforts minimized fire damage to the exterior of the home, enabling them to reoccupy their home.

The fire appears to be accidental in nature, Brown noted, and is under investigation by the Chilliwack Fire Department to determine the cause. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries.
