CHILLIWACK — Multiple fire engines from the Agassiz Fire Department and Popkum Fire Department responded to the report of a mobile home on fire Monday morning (Oct. 23) just northeast of the Agassiz-Rosedale Bridge.

According to scanner traffic, firefighters were dispatched for the report of a structure fire on Bridge Road near Whelpton Road, not far from the bridge, at approximately 7:40 a.m. Monday.

At least four RCMP vehicles attended the scene alongside BC Ambulance Service, Agassiz and Popkum fire personnel.

All fire units were cleared from the location of the fire at 10:39 a.m. and RCMP remained on scene.

The fire appears to have occurred on First Nations land because it occurred east of Bridge Road on Tseatah 2, on which Cheam Fishing Village and Campground is located along the Fraser River. According to Statistics Canada’s 2021 census count, 15 people were enumerated as living on Tseatah 2.

If viewed from Bridge Road, a fire engine was visible on a dirt path leading down to where the fire apparently occurred behind a red shack along the east side of Bridge Road.

Fraser Valley Today attempted to take a picture of the mobile home at 10 a.m. that had apparently burned, but an RCMP constable whistled towards a news reporter and directed him away from the scene. First responders appeared to be processing paperwork around the same time.

According to scanner traffic, FortisBC and BC Hydro were not dispatched to the scene because of the possibility that there was neither gas nor electricity at the structure.
