CHILLIWACK — A whopping 175 people took time out of their weekend this past Sunday to help clean up Chilliwack-area waterways as part of BC Rivers Day.

According to a Facebook post from the Chilliwack/Vedder River Cleanup Society, 175 people joined them on Sunday (Sept. 24) to collect garbage from the picturesque Chilliwack/Vedder River valley.

“Thank you so much for giving of your time,” Chilliwack/Vedder River Cleanup Society wrote on Facebook. “We had fantastic weather for the event and we also could not have done it without our generous partners, City of Chilliwack, Fraser Valley Regional District, McDonald’s (Luckakuck) and Valley Waste & Recycling Inc. Thank you to Western Canoeing and Kayaking for donating our grand raffle prize of an inflatable paddle board and congratulations to Lisa M. our winner!”

A photo taken by Alyssa Cowles shows several volunteers, including Ross Aikenhead, retrieving garbage near a Chilliwack-area waterway.

The Fraser Valley Illegal Dumping Alliance commended the effort put on by the cleanup society.

“Thanks to all that took part in the BC Rivers Day event put on by the Chilliwack Vedder River Cleanup Society,” FVIDA wrote on Facebook.

Similarly, the Fraser Valley Salmon Society urged the community to keep Chilliwack beautiful.

“Today is World Rivers Day. What a great day cleaning up the banks of the Vedder River. Thank you to everyone who helped and for those who also spent the day cleaning up our waterways. Let’s keep our rivers clean,” Fraser Valley Salmon Society wrote on Facebook.
