VANCOUVER — R-C-M-P Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald says the death of an officer in Coquitlam has “gutted” the Mounties.

McDonald says 51-year-old Constable Rick O’Brien was fatally shot in a confrontation while police were executing a search warrant in the Metro Vancouver city of Coquitlam.

He says two other officers were injured and the suspect is in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after being shot during Friday’s incident.

Policing was a second career for O’Brien, who worked with at-risk youth before joining the R-C-M-P in 2016.

B-C’s public safety minister says he was shocked and saddened to learn of the death of O’Brien.

Mike Farnworth offered his condolences to the officer’s loved ones and colleagues on behalf of all B-C residents.

Tributes have been pouring in from across Canada for O’Brien. AbbyPD offered condolences in a social media message, saying “we stand shoulder to shoulder mourning the loss of Constable Rick O’Brien.”

Officials say one of the two officers injured was briefly treated in hospital before being released. The other officer injured remains in hospital but is expected to make a complete recovery. The suspect was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
