Labour announces plans to counter anti-SOGI rally planned in Chilliwack

CHILLIWACK — The B-C Federation of Labour says it’s gearing up to oppose planned rallies in Chilliwack and several other communities in the province on September 20th by groups espousing homophobic and transphobic rhetoric.

The federation says groups opposed to inclusive education around sexual orientation and gender identity, or SOGI (SOH’-jee), are using the issue to fuel bigotry and hate against trans people.

The federation’s statement, released Friday, comes after the B-C Teachers Federation released a letter sent to provincial political leaders calling on them to condemn hate and support SOGI resources in schools.

The teachers federation says public statements from leaders would be helpful in countering “harmful narratives,” as rallies are set to be held next week in Chilliwack, Kelowna, Vancouver, and elsewhere. (The Canadian Press)
