Updated: Police discover deceased female on Hwy. 1

CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack RCMP Sgt. Krista Vrolyk says police are investigating a fatality that occurred early Monday morning, August 28.

In a news release, Sgt. Vrolyk said Chilliwack RCMP received a report of a person laying in the travel portion of Hwy. 1 at Vedder Road at approximately 3:15 am on Monday, August 28. Police arrived to find a female deceased on the roadway.

Police have not indicated if the woman was hit by a moving vehicle or how she passed.

The Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS), the RCMP’s Forensic Identification Service (FIS),  Chilliwack RCMP and the BC Coroners Service are investigating. The highway has reopened to traffic.

No further details on the deceased are being released at this time pending next of kin notification. Police are in the preliminary stage of this investigation and are urging anyone who was in the area of Highway One near the Vedder Road overpass during the early morning hours of Monday, August 28th or anyone who may have dash cam footage to contact the Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611 (reference Chilliwack RCMP 2023-35764). Traffic had been backed up beyond Evans Road and for several kilometres to the west this morning.

According to scanner traffic, police had asked fire personnel to respond to the area of the Vedder Road overpass for some kind of assistance. Chilliwack Fire Department Engine 1 arrived at the Vedder overpass area at 7:22 a.m. Monday morning.

Chilliwack Fire Department Engine 1 radioed dispatch at 7:37 a.m. to indicate their task was complete and they were clear of the scene.
