STAVE LAKE — Three males from Surrey found out the hard way that discharging a shotgun and a rifle at a campground with people nearby isn’t the smartest idea on the planet.

According to Mission RCMP Constable Harrison Mohr, media relations spokesperson for the Mission RCMP detachment, Mission RCMP were dispatched to the area of the Rocky Point campground on Tuesday evening, August 15. They had been called to area after a group of males had been reportedly firing a shotgun and a rifle nearby.

As a matter of fact, Constable Mohr said, the firearms were being discharged so close to the campground that one of the campers could hear bullets flying past their campsite.

Constable Mohr said officers attended and located three males from Surrey leaving the area in a black BMW. One of the three males did in fact have a valid firearms license and told police he had checked the area shooting map in advance to ascertain whether they were legally allowed to shoot.

They were wrong.

“They were mistaken about their location in the wilderness region, and they were still in a no-shooting zone,” Constable Mohr said.

The firearms and firearms license were seized pending further investigation.

“Anyone wanting to do back-country recreational shooting should be clear on where they are allowed to do so, and must ensure that they have a safe background,” Constable Mohr said. “Shooting-area maps are available online on both the City of Mission and the Fraser Valley Regional District websites.”
