HOPE — Heavily armed police, presumably from the RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT), surrounded a home near Yale Street and Thacker Avenue in Hope Monday night in what some residents characterized as a raid on a house.

Residents and witnesses on social media said police used all kinds of tactics and techniques during the high-risk incident including police dogs, drones, flash bangs, and snipers.

Police officers in both uniforms and plain clothes took their positions near Yale and Thacker, with guns drawn, during the incident that started sometime Monday evening.

The home pictured on the right has no relationship to the high-risk incident.

A sniper set up surreptitiously on the roof of a home not far from the home in question. Residents said multiple ERT units responded to the 500 block of Yale Street. No one on social media pinpointed the exact address where the raid occurred.

It should be noted that in the second picture shared by Hope resident Tiffany Boyko-Yorke (shown above), there is a house pictured in front of the stationed police officers. The home in the foreground has no relation to the incident at all. Police just happened to establish their positions at that location during the incident.

The high-risk incident was over by approximately 8 p.m., as ERT members had left the neighbourhood by approximately 8:25 p.m., one resident estimated.

Speculation swirled around whether the incident stemmed from the fatal shooting death of a 28-year-old man early Sunday morning in the 59400 block of St. Elmo Road west of Hope. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken custody of the homicide investigation after Hope RCMP originally responded to the rural area about 30 kilometres east of Annis Road and Hwy. 1.
