CHILLIWACK — Fisheries and Oceans Canada has enacted an immediate restriction on salmon fishing above and below the Vedder Bridge to protect co-migrating sockeye salmon.

In a notice on its website, DFO says it is implementing a boundary change to offer protection to sockeye salmon.

Due to present concerns around the impacts of observed non-compliance activities in portions of the Chilliwack/Vedder Bridge, Fisheries and Oceans Canada says there will be no fishing for salmon approximately 200 meters above the Vedder Crossing bridge down to the cable car crossing approximately 200 meters below the Vedder Crossing bridge. DFO says there are orange triangular boundary signs about 200 metres above the bridge to indicate the boundary change.

These measures will be in effect immediately until September 30.
