CHILLIWACK — The City of Chilliwack says the Chilliwack River Road project should be complete by the end of July.

The project has been in the works for years, initially beginning with a 2016 conceptual study by the Tzeachten First Nation. Together with the City, a design and planning process was begun to connect the Tzeachten Sportsfields, Tzeachten Cemetery, and Band housing to Promontory Road.

Meantime the City upgraded Promontory Road to include bike lanes and sidewalks to connect the Tzeachten Hall, Band offices, to business areas, including restaurants, banks, retail, grocery, and transit connections.

Recently the new pathway was paved and a pair of crosswalks were laid out. Each crosswalk has a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon system to improve pedestrian safety by making the crossings more obvious to drivers.

All that is left to do is some electrical work which will result in improvements to lighting in the area, the installation of the remaining street signage and the markings for the green bike lanes. Some final landscaping work will complete the project.

The City, in partnership with Tzeachten First Nation, secured $1 million in provincial grants for the project.
