Campfire ban returns for Fraser Valley and beyond

Jul 6, 2023 | 5:50 AM

CHILLIWACK — A new campfire ban in the Coastal Fire Centre, which includes the Fraser Valley, goes into effect Friday (Jul. 7) at noon. The ban covers the entire Coastal Fire Centre with the exception of the Haida Gwaii Forest District.

The ban was initially put in place earlier this year due to dry conditions throughout the area but was partially lifted in most areas except for Chilliwack last month. The new ban will remain in place until October 31 unless it is rescinded earlier.

With the ban, all open fires are essentially prohibited including fireworks; sky lanterns, burn barrels, air curtain burners, binary exploding targets, Chimineas and all torches. The use of a campstove or a CSA approved propane campfire device is allowed.

Anyone who lights, fuels or uses an open fire when a fire prohibition is in place or fails to comply with an open fire prohibition may be issued a ticket for $1,150 or, if convicted in court, be fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be subject to a penalty of up to $100,000 and ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.
