
Man who was convicted of second-degree murder of his mom dies at Mission prison
MISSION — A man who was convicted in the second-degree murder of his mom has died at Mission Institution, a medium-security federal prison in the Fraser Valley.
The Correctional Service of Canada said in a press release dated Monday, May 1 that Damian Hawley died while in custody on April 29.
Hawley was charged with first-degree murder in the death of his 85-year-old mother, which happened in 2014 in Ontario. He attacked her with a hammer. He wound up pleading guilty to second-degree murder. A judge sentenced him to no parole eligibility for 12 years.
At the time of death, the inmate had been serving an indeterminate sentence, which commenced on November 16, 2016, for second-degree murder, CSC said.
