CHILLIWACK — Post Creek is a remote subdivision of 80 recreational homes nestled in the picturesque terrain of the Chilliwack River Valley about 38 kilometres east of the Vedder Bridge.

To guard against the spread of any fires in that vicinity and implement what’s known as a “FireSmart” approach, the Chilliwack River Valley Fire Department teamed up with the B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS) on Tuesday (May 2) to undertake an annual cleanup of the fire break that surrounds part of the Chilliwack River Valley.

“Initiatives like this help support FireSmart and protect properties in the event of a approaching wildfire,” Chilliwack River Valley Fire Department wrote on Facebook.

CRVFD Chief Mike Danyluk, a volunteer just like the other 29 members of the department’s volunteer roster, said the department dispatched one of its trucks with a crew of three firefighters in the joint exercise with B.C. Wildfire Service.

“Our crews were there for about 4-5 hours,” Danyluk said. “This is the second year we have done it and it is now an annual event. We work with BCWS and the local residents to do the event. The fire break surrounds the Post Creek community, which has approximately 80 properties with cabins, etc. Post Creek has been recognized as FireSmart community by FireSmartBC for several years now.”

Also on Tuesday, three members from CRVFD completed the practical portion of their fire service instructor course in the evening. The course required hours of work, written assignments, practical skills, and an exam.

“Being certified Instructors and Evaluators will help to further develop our team and future fire fighters,” CRVFD wrote on Facebook. “Congratulations to Training Officer Keagan, FF Tegan, and FF Josh for the completion of this training. We appreciate your dedication and commitment.”
