CHILLIWACK — Quick work by firefighters and an apartment building sprinkler system is being credited with limiting the fire damage in a four-storey apartment building in the 9400 block of Victor Street Tuesday (Apr. 4) afternoon.

In a news release, the Chilliwack Fire Department says it was called to the fire at 12:05 p.m. Over 40 firefighters responded from Halls 1, 2, 4, and 6. When they arrived on the scene, they found heavy, black smoke and flames on an exterior top unit of the apartment building.

After securing a water supply, crews were able to quickly knock the fire down. Officials say the majority of the fire damage was on the exterior and underside of the roof system above the fire-damaged unit.

Fire officials say a portion of the building received fire, smoke and water damage, however they believe the efforts of fire crews and the automatic fire sprinkler system significantly limited the spread of the fast-moving fire and prevented several other units from being damaged.
