CHILLIWACK — They’re a nice addition to any neighbourhood, especially when volunteers and users alike replenish or donate materials to keep them afloat.

Ryder Lake Farmers’ Institute wrote on Facebook this week that a Little Free Library book-sharing box has been installed next to the noticeboard on Elk View Road as part of a City of Chilliwack Grass Roots grant.

The goal of the Grass Roots grant is to reinvigorate neighbourhoods or make public areas more usable and aesthetic. The Grass Roots grant program offers 50/50 matching funding to local neighbourhood groups to a maximum of $4,000.

“Please do just take a book – you don’t have to return it! If you have books you’d like to share, please add them to the Library,” Ryder Lake Farmers’ Institute wrote on its Facebook page this week.

On March 24, Ryder Lake Farmers’ Institute shared a picture of Mayor Ken Popove awarding Ryder Lake residents a grant of $3,880, signed by the mayor and the director of finance, Glen Savard.

“We have been awarded a Grass Roots Grant of nearly $4,000 by the City of Chilliwack to replace the noticeboard on Elk View Rd.,” the Facebook post read. “This is a matching grant to cover the cost of materials if volunteers put in their time on the project too. This grant is for projects on City land, and they have committed to help with cleaning up the ditch and with the design of a panel with visitor information (see the rough mockup image of a new noticeboard). We will also be installing a new Little Free Library. We’ll be calling for some volunteers to help with building the new structure and figuring out the content on the information panel!”
