Greendale Acres to host Chilliwack Plowing Match Saturday

CHILLIWACK — A tradition unlike any other in Chilliwack returns this weekend.

Established in 1923, the Chilliwack Plowing Match has been operating every single consecutive year up until 2020, when COVID-19 restrictions precluded the event from happening. Without this break, the society would have held the plowing showcase for 101 years straight leading into 2023.

The annual festivities amount to a huge part of Chilliwack’s storied farming history. In the 1950s the event drew over 55 competitors and 3,000-plus spectators.

“The whole town used to shut down on plowing match day!” Greendale Acres wrote about the event on its website.

This year’s match happens Saturday, April 1 at Greendale Acres at 41905 Yale Road West.

This year’s entry fee of $10/person (for ages 3+) includes a free pancake breakfast, opening ceremonies, access to the farm’s grounds and attractions, animal displays, live music by Ryan McAllister, spectator viewing areas, tractor wagon rides, and a horseshoeing demonstration.

Festivities are as follows:

8:30 Competitors arrive and set up field
9:00 Doors open to the farm
10:30 Competition starts
11:00 Beer Garden Opens (11-3)
12:00 Ryan McCallister Live Music (12-3pm)
2:30 Closing remarks and ceremony
3:00 Doors Close
