MISSION — Mission RCMP officers were deployed to Hatzic Middle School in Mission after the school received a phone call Monday afternoon from a caller that threatened to attack the school.

According to a post from the Mission RCMP Facebook page Tuesday morning (Mar. 28), lockdown measures were immediately implemented at Hatzic Middle School once a caller phoned in a threat at 12:35 p.m. Monday.

Constable Harrison Mohr said Mission RCMP attended, along with the RCMP’s Integrated Police Dog Service and officers from the Emergency Response Team, to investigate the threat. Officers canvassed the school and went to each classroom to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff.

Constable Mohr said investigators identified the person who made the threat to attack the school as a 12-year-old girl from Maple Ridge who has no apparent ties to the school.

Police said there was no indication that there was any intent to carry out the threat, and it appears to have been an extremely irresponsible prank call, Constable Mohr said in his Facebook post. No one at the school was injured, and students were released in time to depart at the end of the school day.

Mission RCMP’s youth liaison officer will be meeting with staff and students at Hatzic Middle School on Tuesday, March 28, to answer questions and provide support as needed.

“This was obviously a stressful day for students, staff and parents at the school,” Constable Mohr said. “We’re thankful that it ended well, and we commend the staff and administration at the school for their efforts in keeping students calm and safe.”

Constable Mohr pointed out that Mission RCMP and Ridge Meadows RCMP are continuing their investigation, and will be working with the girl that made the threat to help her to understand the consequences of making this type of call.
