CHILLIWACK — A member of the Chilliwack RCMP was injured and required hospitalization after a male driver who was apparently asleep in his vehicle fled police when he was awakened, collided with a parked police vehicle, and was later apprehended by the Abbotsford Police Department.

In a statement from Corporal Martin Godard, the Chilliwack RCMP responded to a well-being complaint at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 28 at the corner of Charles Street and Loring Avenue in Chilliwack.

According to Cpl. Godard, Mounties who responded to the call located two individuals who appeared to be sleeping in a running vehicle. After waking the male driver, police identified themselves and asked that the vehicle be turned off. The male driver shifted the car into gear and fled the scene, allegedly colliding with the parked police vehicle and injuring the male Chilliwack RCMP officer, who was not identified, in the process.

With his emergency lights activated, the injured RCMP officer followed the vehicle briefly but stopped his vehicle out of concern for public safety. The member conveyed critical information that assisted the Abbotsford Police Department in locating and stopping the vehicle.

The driver, Dane Nikolas Lee Miller, was taken into custody and is facing charges of flight from a peace officer, dangerous operation, failure to stop after accident, and driving while prohibited.

“This is yet another reminder of the risks inherent to the profession,” said Cpl. Martin Godard, media relations officer for the Upper Fraser Valley RCMP. “We are thankful for the member’s dedication and wish him a prompt recovery.”

The Chilliwack RCMP member was released from Chilliwack General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
