YOUR PERSPECTIVE: A New Year’s wish list for B.C.

Jan 4, 2023 | 6:43 AM

It’s hard to believe that it is already 2023. It feels like the holiday season flew by in the blink of an eye, but as difficult as that is to process, I am entering this year with hope and optimism. The beginning of a new year always feels like a fresh start, and opportunity to make changes and take on new challenges. I think it is important to use this restart to not just work on self-improvement, but to make a positive difference in our communities and the world around us.

This year, I have a number of new year’s resolutions and a wish list of sorts for the year ahead. As a member of the Official Opposition, I will continue to work to ensure British Columbians’ voices are heard in Victoria, put pressure on government to address the critical issues facing our province, and hold the NDP accountable for the promises they have made to the people of B.C.

As we head into 2023, there is certainly no shortage of challenges facing our province that our government must act on.

Our health care system remains in a serious crisis that must be urgently addressed to save lives. It’s unacceptable that one in five British Columbians don’t have access to a family doctor, that a million people are on waiting lists to see specialists, and that people are no longer confident that they will be able to get the health care they need, when they need it.

Steps must be taken to fight inflation and improve affordability, and we need greater action to keep our streets safe in the face of more frequent violent crime in so many B.C. communities.

We need to see a renewed focus on seniors and other vulnerable populations. We saw two reports last year that brought attention to the serious challenges facing our seniors in B.C., including a lack of housing options, worsening access to health care, and far too many seniors struggling to make ends meet as the affordability crisis worsens.

And while these issues may be especially pronounced among seniors, they are being felt by people across the province. We desperately need government to invest in building more housing options for people of all incomes and ages, and to finally deliver the renters’ rebate they promised more than five years ago.

With a new year ahead of us and a new Premier in office, I sincerely hope that we will soon see positive steps forward for all of B.C. We need real results from government that actually improve the lives of everyday people. I can only hope the NDP government has made the same resolutions this year.
