Abby PD pitches higher salaries than RCMP to recruit experienced police officers

ABBOTSFORD — Just a week after the B.C. RCMP posted on social media that it is offering experienced police officers a starting salary of over $106,000, the Abbotsford Police Department responded by rolling out the red carpet for experienced police officers.

In a Facebook post Friday (Dec. 2), Abby PD sought to recruit experienced police officers by offering a private tour and a 1-on-1 chat with Chief Constable Mike Serr.

“Attention Experienced Officers!” Abby PD wrote. “Confidential private tours are back. Want to have firsthand experience of the AbbyPD? Your private tour includes a 20-minute chat with the Chief, a tour of HQ, coffee break, and 2-hour ride along.”

A link (www.linktr.ee/joinabbypd) invites applicants to not only register for a time to meet with Abby PD personnel, but to also explore the department’s salaries and benefits that are clearly outlined on its website.

As of January 2022, officers who attain the rank of fifth class constable with Abby PD earn a starting yearly salary of $72,610, or $34.91 per hour, on the first day they are hired.

A fourth class constable who successfully passes the police academy earns $83,780 a year, or $40.28 per hour.

A third class constable (attained after one year) earns $89,366 annually, or $42.96 per hour.

A first class constable (attained after three years) earns $111,707 a year, or $53.71 per hour.

When comparing salaries of officers with three years of experience, the municipal police agency appears to have a slightly higher salary than the B.C. RCMP, which posted on Facebook Friday (Nov. 25) that it is now accepting applications for experienced officers with starting salaries of $106,576 for officers with three years of service.

However, the RCMP affords applicants the opportunity to apply to work in other provinces, if available, where the cost of housing is generally cheaper than B.C.
