G.W. Graham JV blanks Sardis Secondary JV 39-0 after Sardis senior forfeits; six different players score

CHILLIWACK — G.W. Graham was looking forward to playing its intracity rivals Sardis Secondary in the final week of the regular season, but the Falcons had to forfeit the final game of the season for unspecified reasons.

As a result, the Grizzlies JV squad was tasked with squaring off against its JV rivals in Sardis, and G.W. left no doubts with a 39-0 win Wednesday (Nov. 2) behind three TDs from QB Michael Blair, who threw for two and ran for one.

Defensive coordinator Ian Parks said most of the players on both teams played against each other on the Chilliwack Giants, with plenty of smiles in between plays, and all business during the plays.

The offence featured a well-balanced attack by virtue of six touchdowns from six different players. Of the six scores, three came by air and the rest on the ground. Offensive coordinator Terrell Sparvier utilized two QBs, three running backs, and seven wide receivers, in essence preparing them for the playoffs.

Running back Denver Adam had a 1-yard TD run, while fellow running back Ayden Radke bolted 99 yards for his own touchdown. Charlie Larson caught a 5-yard touchdown, and fellow wideout Logan Murphy hauled in a 12-yard TD reception. Rylan Parks threw a touchdown as the second quarterback the Grizzlies used, and Tyson Jones rounded out the scoring with his own 20-yard TD catch.

On defence, secondary member Carson Raine had a 50-yard interception returned back to the Falcon 3 yard line, as well as a fumble recovery. Strong safety Noah Sandau had an interception that he returned 25 yards, and LB Ridley Mastin forced another fumble. The whole defence had a stellar goal-line stand with 4 stops from inside their 1-yard line. DE Evan Tiessen had 3 tackles, 1 sack, and a tackle for loss, and LB Tyson Jones had 3 tackles, and several QB hurries.

Defensive coordinator Ian Parks expressed satisfaction that he had 39 players utilized, ironically in a 39-0 win, in what he called a “well-rounded, team effort.”

“Any time you can hold the other team to about 22 yards of net offence in the first half, it energizes the rest of the players for the balance of the game,” Parks said.

JV head coach Matt Greenfield said, “The team has been getting better every week. We are starting to fire on all cylinders in all 3 phases of the game and are ready for the playoffs to start next week.”

The JV Grizzlies are waiting on the scheduling, but could face St. Thomas More next week in a rematch of their exhibition game in September, when they won 35-14 on September 22.
